Weird and Rare – Teisco’s Banjuitar

Anyone ever seen one of these out in the wild? It’s certainly a rare bird and a pleasure to witness first hand. It’s a 1968 Teisco Del Ray Banjuitar.

Let’s go over how weird it is, shall we? The “head” isn’t really a head. The body is made to look like a banjo, with multiple layers of wood, routing, binding and a pickguard. Essentially it’s a solid body guitar with 2 pickups (that sound killer), volume and tone controls and a spring-loaded tremolo tailpiece.

The original bridge would have had a muting mechanism that would cut the sustain in order to sound more banjo-like. This one has had it’s original bridge replaced with a tune-o-matic type. Lots of fun and a very uncommon species.
